In response to a programme on BBC Radio 4, dedicated to the lemon, I painted several versions of this painting of the fruit, placed simply against different coloured backgrounds. The programme made the fruit seem wonderful, with the ability to enhance the flavours of many other foods. I wanted to paint an image with that same sense of wonder, relying on the intensity of the colour and clarity of the form, and the quality of light reflected off the skin of the fruit and the fabric.
